If you can, please help us.

Hi, I'm Gary

I hope you enjoy my website.  At least, I hope it won't be offensive to you.  It won't be if you care for animals.  I am concerned with animal welfare. I care especially when animals are unnecessarily abused or not cared for.

If you own horses and dogs, or any other animal, you are responsible for them.  It is much more fun if done so with care and concern for them.  And neglect is really stupid. Persons who have animals need to care for them.

If you are aware of animal abuse, do something.  I am against animal abuse or neglect of any kind.

Our Mission

KCR Ranch is dedicated to tell our story about our animals and make other animals safe and happy and strive every day to do something that will make someone's day, or some animals day, a little better than it otherwise would be.

Thank You!

I admire everyone associated with our Ford County Humane Society.  They are VIP's to the animals they help.  Their volunteer efforts make a lot of difference in the lives of the animals they care so much about.  Please help if you can.  If not in our County, maybe where you live.  Animals looking for help can be found by clicking here.

Wild West's Millie G (1991-2004)Save Dogs

Millie was very timid and abused throughout her first 15 months. She was hit, shocked, jerked and thrown in with older dogs, had a litter of pups before she was 15 months. It took 7 years for her to become not afraid. She was scared to death of just about everything. It took all those years of TLC and gentle training to get her over her fears but she became a really good hunter and she was never hit, shocked or yelled at. I retrained her without pain. It proves that timid hunting dogs can be well trained if properly handled.

What a waste. Had she not been first abused, it would have been easy to train her to hunt and it would have been easy to help her to be not afraid. She and I worked hard for her to have a good life and she became a really good bird dog and a great friend.

Millie passed on 9/16/2004 and I will miss her terribly but her courage, and my patience with her, created memories I will never forget. God bless you Millie.  (For Millie's Story click here)

FerdinandLet horses have their dignity!

Horses spend their lives doing things for us. So we owe them, big time, when they are old, tired and maybe sick or lame. They need our help, not our callused abuse. If a horse needs to be put down, it should be humane. Although old, they should live, or die, with dignity they earned by giving to us all those years of pleasure.

ExcellerExceller made more than $1.6 million for his owners.  After retiring from racing, with his first crop of 2-year-olds in 1994, he was second on the stallion list (as a sire of 2-year-olds) with 14 runners and five winners. In 1995 he was sixth on the  general list with 29 offspring and 13 winners and third on the 2-year-old list with 11 runners and four winners. In 1996 he was fourth on the general list with 29 runners and 10 winners.

Then he was led into a slaughter house to die.  How sad for this great horse who beat 2 Triple Crown winners (Seattle Slew and Affirmed).  The only good thing to come from his death was horse rescue.  "The Exceller Fund" helps retired race horses who gave their all and can no longer make a profit.  It's not their fault.  Click here to visit The Exceller Fund

They're better friends than we are!

Dogs love people and depend upon people and, too often, we let them down and treat them bad. We need to be their friend and keeper. After all, we domesticated them and they will do just about anything for us.

Click here to learn more about Magnum!

MagnumExcerpt from a local newspaper:  The little dog, dubbed Magnum, was brought to the clinic with wounds resulting from torture. Patches of skin had been burned off with chemicals. Its front legs were wired together, cutting the flesh. One paw was stuffed into his mouth with suffocating effect. A leg was broken. Maggots squirmed in open wounds. He wagged his tail, licked the doctor and fought for life.  He died five days later.

If this is disturbing to you, do something.  You don't have to go out.  Just go to the sites at the bottom of this page and offer your support.  Poor little Magnum helped make animal abuse in Kansas a felony.  His death caused awareness and lawmakers responded.  Don't count on lawmakers though.  One emailed me that he couldn't vote on the bill because it might make it more serious than child abuse.  It passed anyway.  Maybe he doesn't have the will to help defenseless animals or children.  We should vote for someone who does have courage.

We did it for Magnum in Kansas. We now have a felony law against animal abuse.  Now if you live in one of the other 8 states that don't consider cruelty to animals a felony, write your congressman and ask that animal cruelty become a felony.  It is shameful that any state's lawmakers care not for animals who give us so much entertainment and pleasure.  Just hug a horse, dog or any animal, then write your congressman about animal protection.

You know what? Magnum is with God in Heaven now. I know I'm supposed to forgive but this is just too much for me. I hope his attacker, or attackers, pay for this and any other acts of cruelty they impose on helpless animals.

Hugo's owner got jail time and its not enough.

He let Hugo starve to death!  These people live among us.  Join the fight.  Help your Humane Society.

Only two short years ago, PETA delivered a custom-built doghouse to Hugo, a sweet dog who had been chained outside without any shelter from the broiling sun or the freezing cold. Thanks to kind supporters, we regularly bring the same comfort to hundreds of neglected "backyard" dogs every year, animals whose mean owners will not give them away and will only do the minimum within the law—if that. Hugo's owner knew that local laws did not require shelter for dogs, and we were lucky not to be thrown off the property when we arrived with our "gift."

PETA field workers checked in on Hugo last New Year's Day to fill his house with new straw bedding.
They found Hugo curled up inside his doghouse. Hugo was dead, and his body was just a bag of bones.

PETA's statement: We gained custody of Hugo's body and had him examined by a veterinarian. Hugo had been starved to death, his stomach empty except for some grass and orange peels. PETA immediately put a case file together and pressed local officials to file cruelty-to-animals charges. Through hard work and PETA's own testimony, Hugo's abusive owner was convicted and has received jail time and five years' probation. We also asked that he not be allowed to own or set foot in any home where an animal is present, and the judge granted that condition as part of his probation.
